This itinerary offers a journey through Rwanda’s cultural and natural highlights. You'll visit historic sites like the King’s Palace and National Museum in Butare, trek through Nyungwe Forest to see chimpanzees and other primates, and explore the scenic beauty of Lake Kivu. The adventure culminates with gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park before returning to Kigali for your departure. Day 1

Arrival in Kigali and Journey to Nyungwe Forest

  • Arrival in Kigali: Guests are greeted at Kigali International Airport, transferred to the Novotel Umubano Hotel for a briefing over coffee.
  • Drive to Butare (2 hours): Butare, known as Rwanda’s cultural hub, houses Rwanda’s largest university and is close to the former royal seat.
  • Nyanza King’s Palace: A stop at the King’s Palace, a traditional dome-shaped structure maintained as a museum.
  • National Museum of Rwanda: A visit to the museum showcasing one of East Africa’s richest ethnographic collections.
  • Lunch at Ibis Hotel, Butare, followed by a scenic drive to Nyungwe Forest, with an optional visit to a genocide memorial at Gikongoro.
  • Evening and Overnight: Stay at Gisakura Guest House, a basic lodge in Nyungwe Forest.
  • Day 2: Nyungwe Forest and Primates:
    • Early breakfast followed by chimpanzee and primate tracking in Nyungwe Forest, East Africa’s largest montane forest. The reserve is known for its diverse flora and fauna, with more than 13 species of primates and 275 bird species.
    • Lunch at the lodge and an afternoon visit to the Gisakura Tea Plantation and factory.
    • Overnight at Gisakura Guest House.
  • Day 3: Second Day in Nyungwe & Lake Kivu:
    • Another early morning chimpanzee trek, followed by lunch at the Guest House.
    • Transfer to Cyangungu, located on the shores of Lake Kivu, a picturesque lake surrounded by steep, terraced hills.
    • Speedboat ride to Kibuye, lunch there, and continue to Lake Kivu Serena Hotel for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 2 & 3

Primates Tracking in Nyungwe and Lake Kivu Excursion

Day 4 - 6

Gorilla Trekking, Volcanoes National Park, and Departure

  • Day 4: Scenic Drive to Ruhengeri:

    • Relaxing Lakeside Breakfast: Start the day with a leisurely breakfast overlooking Lake Kivu.
    • Journey to Ruhengeri: Depart for Ruhengeri, the main base for gorilla trekking, with a picturesque drive of approximately 1.5 hours, including stops and a picnic lunch along the way.
    • Overnight at Gorilla Mountain View Lodge: Arrive at your lodge in Kinigi, situated at the base of the Volcanoes, for dinner and overnight accommodation.
  • Day 5: Mountain Gorilla Tracking Adventure:

    • Gorilla Trekking Briefing: After breakfast, head to the Parc National des Volcans for a briefing on gorilla tracking procedures and etiquette.
    • Tracking Experience: Set off into the breathtaking Virunga Mountains, where you will search for mountain gorillas, an unforgettable experience that could last until midday.
    • Lunch at the Lodge: Return for lunch at the lodge, followed by an optional visit to the scenic Twin Lakes, Bulera and Ruhondo, if time permits.
    • Return to Kigali: After the day’s adventures, travel back to Kigali for an overnight stay at either Novotel Umubano or Kigali Serena Hotel.
  • Day 6: Departure from Kigali:

    • Final Breakfast and Departure: Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before being transferred to Kigali International Airport for your departure flight to Nairobi. An Adventures and Expeditions representative will assist with check-in and flight confirmation.
