This 12-day safari itinerary takes you through Kenya's diverse wildlife reserves and stunning landscapes. Starting in Samburu, you'll encounter unique species and enjoy scenic game drives. Then, head to Ol Pejeta Conservancy for rare wildlife sightings before exploring Lake Nakuru, known for its rhinos and flamingos. In the Maasai Mara, witness the great wildebeest migration and Africa’s iconic animals. You’ll visit Swara Plains for more intimate wildlife experiences, followed by Amboseli's famous elephant herds and views of Mount Kilimanjaro. The journey concludes in Tsavo West, home to "man-eating lions" and natural wonders like Mzima Springs, before returning to Nairobi.

Days 1 - 3

Nairobi, Samburu, and Laikipia

Day 1: Nairobi to Samburu

  • Arrival in Nairobi: Early morning arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
  • Journey to Samburu: After a briefing, drive north across the equator to Samburu Game Reserve. Samburu is unique for hosting species found only north of the equator.
  • Landscape and Wildlife: Samburu’s landscape is a mix of rugged hills, woodlands, grasslands, and wetlands, providing habitats for a diverse range of animals and birds.
  • Afternoon Game Drive: Enjoy a post-lunch observatory drive until sunset, immersing in the beauty of the region.
  • Accommodation: Overnight at Samburu Simba with dinner provided.

Day 2: Samburu National Reserve Exploration

  • Morning and Afternoon Game Drives: Full day to explore Samburu National Reserve, with sightings of various animals including giraffes, elephants, Grevy’s zebras, and unique species like the long-necked giraffe gazelle.
  • River and Birdlife: The Ewaso Ng’iro River supports life in the reserve, offering over 380 bird species to observe.
  • Cultural Influence: The area is home to the Samburu people, closely related to the Maasai.
  • Meals and Stay: All meals and overnight at Samburu Simba.

Day 3: Samburu to Laikipia (Ol Pejeta Conservancy)

  • Morning Drive to Ol Pejeta: After breakfast, travel to Ol Pejeta Conservancy, known for rare species like the Beisa oryx, Rothschild’s giraffe, and black rhino.
  • Wildlife Experience: Encounter the Big Five, including lions, leopards, cheetahs, and elephants, along with optional activities like bird walks and horseback riding.
  • Visit to Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary: A highlight is visiting the chimpanzees, protected under the Jane Goodall Institute.
  • Accommodation: All meals and overnight at Aberdares Country Club.

Day 4: Laikipia to Lake Nakuru

  • Equator Crossing and Thompson Falls: After breakfast, cross the equator heading south, with a stop at Thompson Falls before continuing to Lake Nakuru.
  • Wildlife in Lake Nakuru: The park is renowned for its flamingos and as a sanctuary for rhinos, both black and white. Spot hippos, otters, and various grazing animals like zebras, waterbucks, and reedbucks.
  • Conservation Success: Learn about the rhino conservation efforts led by Kenya Wildlife Service.
  • Accommodation: Enjoy dinner and overnight at Flamingo Hill Camp.

Day 5: Nakuru to Maasai Mara

  • Drive to Maasai Mara: After breakfast, head to the Maasai Mara Game Reserve, known for hosting the largest concentration of mammals in Africa.
  • Afternoon Game Drive: Arrive at the lodge for lunch before embarking on an afternoon game drive to experience the vast, wildlife-rich savannah.
  • Landscape and Wildlife: Maasai Mara is famous for its scenic savannahs and wide variety of animals, including lions, elephants, and the annual wildebeest migration.
  • Accommodation: Dinner and overnight at AA Mara.

Day 6: Maasai Mara Exploration

  • Full Day Safari: Spend the day deep in Maasai Mara, observing elephants, lions, giraffes, and thousands of antelopes, gazelles, and birds.
  • Wildebeest Migration: Witness the migration if the timing aligns, where millions of wildebeests and zebras move across the plains.
  • Optional Activities: Balloon safaris and Maasai village visits are available for an extra charge.
  • Meals and Stay: All meals and overnight at AA Mara.

Days 4 - 6

Rift Valley and Maasai Mara

Swara Plains, Amboseli, and Tsavo

Day 7: Maasai Mara to Swara Plains

  • Drive to Swara Plains: After breakfast, journey south past Nairobi to Swara Plains Wildlife Conservancy, located 36 km from Nairobi.
  • Wildlife in Swara Plains: With over 3,000 wild animals, enjoy walking or game drives to spot cheetahs, antelopes, giraffes, hyenas, and more.
  • Accommodation: Overnight and meals at Acacia Camp.

Day 8: Swara Plains to Amboseli National Park

  • Morning Drive to Amboseli: After breakfast, head to Amboseli National Park, renowned for its views of Mount Kilimanjaro and large herds of elephants.
  • Park Landscape: The dry, dusty landscape contrasts with the abundant water from Kilimanjaro’s melting snow.
  • Meals and Stay: Dinner and overnight at AA Lodge.

Day 9: Amboseli Game Viewing

  • Morning and Afternoon Game Drives: Explore Amboseli, home to zebras, giraffes, lions, and large-tusked elephants. Enjoy birdwatching, with over 400 species recorded.
  • Mountain Views: Catch stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru.
  • Meals and Stay: All meals and overnight at AA Lodge.

Day 10: Amboseli to Tsavo West

  • Drive to Tsavo West: After breakfast, journey to Tsavo West National Park, famous for the “man-eating lions” of railway construction fame.
  • Game Drive: Explore the park’s diverse habitats, including mountains, rivers, and forests, and embark on walking safaris.
  • Accommodation: All meals and overnight at Ziwani Camp.

Day 11: Tsavo West Exploration

  • Visit to Mzima Springs: A natural wonder, the springs provide 230 million liters of water daily. A glass-walled shelter offers a unique view of underwater life, including hippos and crocodiles.
  • Day of Learning: Continue learning about Tsavo West’s geological and natural features.
  • Meals and Stay: All meals and overnight at Ziwani Camp.

Day 12: Tsavo West to Nairobi and Departure

  • Return to Nairobi: After breakfast, drive back to Nairobi through Tsavo West, where you’ll be escorted to the airport for your departure flight.
